WOFF2 is the current web standard font format — a font file compressed with Brotli (the same algorithm behind modern HTTP compression) using an encoder specifically tuned for font data's internal structure, typically producing files 30-50% smaller than the equivalent WOFF1 and significantly smaller than a raw TTF or OTF. Every major browser has supported WOFF2 since around 2018, and today it's the format every serious web performance guide recommends for self-hosted fonts.
This tool uses Google's own reference WOFF2 encoder, compiled to WebAssembly, running entirely in your browser tab. It takes the exact same SFNT font data a TTF or OTF file contains — glyph outlines, hinting instructions, metrics tables — and re-encodes it with WOFF2's font-specific transform (which reorganizes glyph and location tables for better compression) followed by Brotli compression. The visual output of the font is identical; only the file's byte size and wrapper format change.
For a typical desktop-distributed TTF font, expect a 40-60% size reduction after WOFF2 conversion, which translates directly into faster page loads for any site serving custom fonts — font files are render-blocking resources in most setups, so shaving even 50KB off a webfont can measurably improve how quickly text becomes visible.
Need to go the other direction and get a usable desktop font back out of a WOFF2? Use WOFF2 to TTF.
