RAR is a proprietary archive format owned by win.rar GmbH — reading a RAR file is openly documented and widely supported, but CREATING one legally requires a licensed copy of WinRAR or its SDK, which is why free online tools (including this one) can open RAR files but can't produce new ones. This tool reads your RAR archive's contents using libarchive compiled to WebAssembly, then repackages everything into a standard ZIP file — a format with no licensing restrictions that every operating system can open natively.
The practical effect is you get a drop-in replacement: all your files, same names, same folder structure, just in a format that doesn't require WinRAR, 7-Zip, or any other software to open. This matters most for Mac and Linux users, since RAR support isn't built into either operating system the way ZIP is, and for anyone who received a RAR archive but doesn't want to install dedicated extraction software just to open it once.
One limitation worth knowing upfront: password-protected RAR archives can't be processed. The underlying library can read standard RAR compression, but encrypted entries require the password to decrypt, which this tool doesn't currently prompt for — attempting to convert an encrypted RAR will fail with an error rather than silently producing a broken ZIP.
Already have a ZIP and just want to look inside it? Use Extract ZIP directly — no conversion needed.
